Jesus Wept

Jesus Wept is an original Fox and Pebble illustration by Malory Fiso
At church youth activities, when I was a teenager, someone was regularly asked to share a scripture before the activity began. The scripture most often chosen, by teenagers that weren’t exceptionally excited to get up in front of the group to speak, was the shortest one they could find - John 11:35 that simply reads “Jesus wept”
After hearing those two words so often, I finally reached a point where I was curious enough to want to understand the context behind them. This verse is included in the account of Christ raising Lazarus from the dead. When Mary falls down at His feet, weeping, He wept too. Not because He was sad about losing Lazarus - He had already reassured Martha that he would rise again. He weeps with us out of love.
I have had many times where I have figuratively fallen down at the Lords feet, weeping and pleading for help. And every time the words “Jesus wept” come to me. That simple verse, that I heard so often as a teenager, has brought me so much comfort. To be able to weep, and know that He weeps with me, is often what carries me through. He willingly experienced my pains and heartaches. He willingly did that for me and for you.
Because of Him, and what He endured alone in a garden, we never weep alone 🤍
